GEORGE WALTER BILLINGSLEY, JR.
George entered this life on December 28, 1956 in San Diego, California and entered into rest on March 5,
2012 at the age of 55 years in San Diego, California.
He will be deeply missed by his partner Peter
Moller of 29 memorable years, father George W., mother Johnnie M., sisters Alfreda and Adrienne, brothers Ronald and wife
Dawn, Terence and wife Melanie, and Adrian and wife Marilyn, as well as 10+ nieces and nephews, his 1year old grand-niece,
and extended family and friends. George was a native San Diegan having had a wondrously wholesome
childhood in Coronado, California.
After graduation from Mission Bay
High School with honors he attended several colleges, a seminary and
universities on academic scholarships. Some of these institutions included Claflin University,
South Carolina State, Howard University,
Morehouse and San Diego State
University. He has Bachelor degrees in Philosophy, Mathematics, Religion
and Secondary Education. He has worked as a business and personnel administrator for American Stores for 20 years and
retired in 1993. In 2000, he started his own business with his partner, My Back Yard Nursery, and was considered one of the
best landscape designers in San Diego County.
He has long been a community activist and a familiar person of interest with our local and state elected officials and has
served many years on the boards of the North Park Neighborhood Association, North Park Maintenance Assessment District, South
Park Business Association, North Park Rainbow Business Alliance, transcenDANCE and the City Heights Business Association. More recently George was the founder & President of a non-profit organization, ARTS
CUP, (Art, South Park Cultural Urban Project) to promote an education and appreciation to the San Diego community, of worldwide
cultural contributions to the Arts through teaching, the development of music tutorial programs, dance, acting and public
performances; to help diminish the broadening educational deficit emerging in the decreasing emphasis in the teaching of the
Arts due to Local and State budget cuts to the pubic school curriculum.
George
was a member of Christ United Presbyterian Church of San Diego where he first envisioned the birth of ARTS CUP and other projects
to extend a loving arm to the surrounding neighborhoods of San Diego.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held on Sunday, March 25, 2012 at 1:00 PM at the Christ United Presbyterian Church of
San Diego, 3025 Fir Street, San Diego,
