My Back Yard Nursery, Art and Garden Center, is an urban oasis located at 4017 Swift Avenue at University in the community of City Heights in a neighborhood we fondly call “Villa Portal”, near downtown San Diego. We are delighted to serve your gardening and landscape needs as we have hundreds of healthy organically grown plant species ranging from aquatics to cacti. We have all kinds of trees, from fruit to ornamentals, shrubs, groundcovers, tropicals and houseplants. We specialize in naturalized and indigenous plants unique to the Southern California region.

Additionally, My Back Yard is a forum for the Local Arts. Many San Diego artists’ creations are on display and offered for purchase throughout the nursery. The nursery has hosted and sponsored numerous community events such as concerts, ethnic dance, art exhibitions, Victorian Tea Parties, book readings, book signings, poetry readings and fundraisers. We have been frequently featured on all the major television stations in San Diego for our unique venue and approach to urban revitalization through the blending of garden beautification and the arts. The owners of My Back Yard, George Billingsley, Jr. and Peter Moller, have also fostered a literacy program to teach and improve the reading skills of the young and old. They believe that a literate people are an empowered people and the power of unity is achieved only when there is  an understanding of peoples’ culture through art.

My Back Yard Nursery provides extensive maintenance services for your residential, commercial property or business. Including; complete lawn care, plus shrub and tree pruning, gardening, irrigation and landscape lighting repair. Our landscape services include consultation and advice, design, plant selection; and installation of irrigation systems, fountains, hardscape, lawns, trees and gardens. Our crews are highly trained and experienced, and are under the supervision of a Master Gardener. 

Some of credits include The Readers, “The Best of San Diego 2000”; and awards for “Best Use of Space”, “Best Home landscape” and “Award of Merit” from the San Diego Horticultural Society at the San Diego Home and Garden Show, Garden Masters Exposition 2003. My Back Yard Nursery, Art and Garden Center has been acknowledged as the Best Garden Center/Nursery from “The Best of North Park” 2000 through 2006; and has received a “Certificate of Excellence” from the North Park Planning Committee for our high standards of excellence. The Congress of the United States House of Representatives has also recognized the nursery with the Greater North Park Chamber of Commerce “Tops” 2000 Award for our ambitious commitment to improve and create a strong, healthy relationship between the commercial and residential sectors of a neighborhood while embracing the diversity of its residents.
